A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create or produce a unique product, service or deliverbles. This invariably means that projects usually have a definite beginning and ending. Therefore, one of the qualities that should characterize a good project manager or leader is time consciousness. However, there are factors that always impedes successful completion of a project, which the project team leader or manager must take cognizance of, before embarking on the project. Successful completion of any project requires effective planning. When a project is planned very well, it will be easily and efficiently executed. Hence, the project team leader must as a matter of fact work out the project plan before the execution phase. Proper planning of a project is definitely the beginning of the successful completion of that project. After the planning phase, comes the execution phase. At this phase, the project team leader/manager is set to commence the project proper. This is always where the onus lies on team leader to employ all his or her skills, intellect, management ability, interpersonal relationship with the project team members, and all necessary tools and techniques to enable him or her deliver a quality deliverable on time. Team building should be the primary focus of the project team manager. No project can be effectively and efficiently delivered without the project manager and the project team members working in harmony towards a common goal of delivering quality deliverables with the specified project time. The project leader or manager must select his or her team members with considerations to relevant skills, dedication and hardwork, and must assign roles to the team members with respect to their areas of specialization in order to effectively execute the project. During this execution phase, the project manager has to intelligently breakdown the project into smaller manageable units, the large project should be broken down and carried out in phases or batches, which is called “Work Breakdown Structure” (WBS). This will help the project manager, to effectively and efficiently manage and complete each phase before starting a new phase. It is also the responsibility of the project team manager to effectively control the project, without proper control of the project, there will be lapses in the quality of the deliverables. Each phase of the project must properly be controlled by the project manager, to ensure that a quality products or service is delivered. Proper planning of the project, leads to proper execution, effective control of the project, gives quality deliverables. However, no project succeeds without the co-operation hardwork and collective support of the team members. The project team leader must ensure that the team members work together as one, and for the common goal and objective of carrying out the project. Now, how can the team leader achieve this? “Motivation”. The team leader must motivate his or her project team members, and address them on the project requirements, and what they stand to benefit if the project is effectively delivered within the project time. He or she can do this by frequently visiting the project site, encouraging the team members, building their confidence, morally supporting them, commending them and even give them financial reward or good will, where he thinks they’ve done well. This will help boast their morale and encourage them to work harder. “Payments of Remunerations”. The project team leader must as a matter of responsibility pay the wages of his or her project team members as at when due. This is very important, especially if the project is in phases. Failure to pay the wages of the workers, is a setback to the successful completion of the project within the agreed time. It will definitely kill the effort and confidence of the team members in continuing the project. To ensure that the project is effectively carried out, and delivered within the project time, the project manager or team leader must endeavour to pay the remunerations of all his or her team members after a successful completion of each phase of the project. The project manager or team leader has to be moderate in all his or her actions during the project work. He or she must learn to combine assertiveness and compromise in dealing with the team members. He or she must avoid an excessive overbearing attitude and hard to please, in order to avoid weakening the morale of his or her team members, must be ready to commend them when they deserve commendation, and correct them when necessary. The project manager should note that if the project team members are not motivated to work, the project will definitely fail, and when the project fails, then the project manager or project team leader has failed.
